The Rough Cut is Complete

Just three short weeks after wrapping principal photography I completed a rough cut of the film which came in at 2 hours and 5 minutes without closing credits.

This week and part of next I will be dropping in the sound that was recorded on location. I will also be editing what is called a second cut with a goal of shorting the running time of the film to 1 hour and 55 minutes.

I should have second cut completed by August 17th. This will give me 2 weeks to complete the final and locked cut of the film which I am hoping will have a final running time of 1 hour and 40 minutes with credits. After I have locked the cut of the film, our post sound editor will begin working on mixing and editing the sound (dialogue/music/sound fx). This process will take roughly 2-3 months. In addition to this, during this time I will have the film color corrected, the titles completed and any visual FX that need to be done.
Our goal all along has been to premiere the film at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012 and in order to have a chance at doing this I must have a cut of the film with a proper sound mix completed by September 28th (the submission deadline).

More to come...

Access Hollywood Interview

Check out this Access Hollywood interview on our leading lady Janina Gavankar:
Here is a little sneak peak and my favorite part of course when they mention Satellite of Love.

"While she hasn’t felt a big shift in her popularity just yet, the day after “True Blood’s” Season 4 premiere, the actress admitted she boarded a flight out of town for an indie film she is currently working on (“Satellite of Love”) and overheard the passengers discussing the show’s return, something that made an impact."
Thank you Access Hollywood Interview! We love Janina Gavankar too.

Fashion Miracle

Wow, what an incredible experience! This was my first try at costume design and I have to say, I have found a new passion. Coming from an editorial background this is a very different way of developing outfits and of styling in general. I was able to combine my love for high fashion with my commitment to helping real people look and feel great in their everyday wardrobe. Alex, our wonderful make up artist, Janina, Shannon and I continually found ourselves floored by the constant 'fashion miracle' as we called it that was happening before us. For instance completing all of the actors' over 40 changes the entire duration of shooting on a budget that was  almost unheard of. Total fashion miracle :) And, with the help of my wonderful assistant Anna Demare, I was able to edit myself choosing key pieces that set the characters apart from one another and gave the movie what I hope will be a uniquely characteristic style.

Dressing these beautiful actors for this film we dealt with real body issues, personal style preferences as well as the challenge of creating something artistic all at once. I truly faced practicing what I preach as far as self-love and creating confidence around your style.
One particular fashion miracle that stood out was

I was able to mesh my experience in both areas of fashion to create these characters from the ground up. Well, not really from the ground at all really. Jonathan and Will wrote an incredible script stocked full of style and detailed character traits. Not to mention the wonderful canvases that the actors Janina Gavankar, Shannon Lucio, Nathan Phillips and Zachary Knighton were. They were each so inspiring and had such perfect instincts about who their characters were, I could not have done it without their help.
This film was truly a labor of love for everyone involved and I am so confident that it will be an incredibly beautiful and moving film. I am proud to have been a part of it. It truly was a fashion miracle.

That's a Wrap!!

After 3 weeks of production we wrapped at about 4am Friday morning. Over the next couple days we will be be wrapping the shoot (eg. returning equipment rentals, wardrobe and props and trying to track down security deposits). On Monday I will begin hiring 2 assistant editors and reviewing the footage. My goal is to have an assembly cut within a couple weeks. From there my goal is to have a rough cut of the film by August 31. The Sundance submission deadline is September 26th and in order to have a shot at making that deadline I need to get a cut of the film banged out pretty quickly.

Principle Photography

With only a day and a half of principle photography left I am eager to start reviewing the footage and mapping out post-production.  It has been a tough shoot as we've been forced to rearrange our schedule several times, but we've been getting a lot of great stuff.  The performances by Nathan Phillips, Shannon Lucio, Zach Knighton, Janina Gavankar, Patrick Bauchau, Turk Pipkin, and Chad Mathews have far exceeded my expectations and made my job as director effortless.  Literally.  Every take has been EXACTLY spot on. The actors are the characters and it has been magical to watch.  Steve Acevedo and his camera crew have photographed every scene beautifully and I can't wait until the film is ready to screen.  Our crew, at every position, has worked tirelessly in the hot sun and if they don't care about making a great movie they're faking it nicely.  Within the next week I'll be uploading screen grabs from the actual footage.  More to come...
